Serco, the international service company, has been commended by not-for-profit organisation CDP, which represents 722 institutional investors with $87 trillion in assets, for its approach to the disclosure of climate change information.

For the fourth consecutive year Serco is featured in CDP’s Climate Disclosure Leadership Index and sits in the top 10 per cent of FTSE 350 organisations.

This index, a key component of CDP’s annual FTSE 350 report, highlights the constituent companies within the FTSE 350 Index which have displayed a strong approach to information disclosure regarding climate change. Companies are scored on their climate change disclosure and high scores indicate good internal data management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company.

The index, compiled by PwC on behalf of CDP, provides an evaluation tool for institutional investors and other stakeholders. It is based on analysis of greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reduction targets and the risks and opportunities associated with climate change.

Robert Smith, Serco’s Director of Business Compliance and Ethics, said: I’m very pleased CDP’s Climate Disclosure Leadership Index recognizes Serco in the top 10 per cent of FTSE 350 organisations in terms of our management of climate change risks and opportunities. As a values-led organisation it is extremely important to us that we continually manage our environmental performance, and the index provides a recognised and credible way for us to report this.

Paul Simpson, chief executive officer of CDP, commented: Companies that make the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index have demonstrated strong internal data management practices for the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and energy use. They are also giving clear consideration to the business issues related to climate change and their exposure to climate-related risks and opportunities. This is vital to realising greater efficiencies, protecting the business from risk and capitalizing on opportunities.
